This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the major maritime accidents of
the last 20 years and the importance of the classification societies in them. The aim of
this specific work is on the one hand the general information of anyone is interested
and on the other hand the analysis of the role of classification societies and maritime
insurance in the modern world.
In the light of the bibliographic research, it was attempted to analyze the
conditions and causes of marine casualties and how important was the existence of the
respective certificates by the classification societies. The internationalization trend of
recent years in both the economic and institutional spheres creates new conditions of
action for all those involved in the maritime community, with a key focus on safety,
