The health-care sector is one of the most sensitive but complex areas of a country’s economic activity. A prominent level of public and private health - care demonstrates prosperity and growth but also requires a high consumption of available health - care resources in a country. The effort to preserve the universality of free access of citizens and patients to hospitals for the use of health services is a field of challenge for both researchers and state officers so it could result to an equilibrium point, i.e. the maximum efficiency of health systems, the reduction of costs and the increase in the quality of health services provided.
In a health - care system, productivity and health - care costs are directly related to each other and countries in a good economic condition protect and promote the health - care sector to protect citizens. This relationship is observed by several studies carried out by the World Health Organization. To have proper and effective medical coverage for the health needs of the citizens, it is necessary to present an integrated health system that meets the needs of patients, using the appropriate inputs and available resources.
The purpose of this diploma thesis is to investigate the relationship of total US health - care expenditures with some key macroeconomic variables. The empirical analysis shows that GDP, life expectancy and consumer price index are statistically significant, so they affect the total health - care expenditures.
