Abstract

The specific dissertation is conducted in the framework of the School of Μartime Studies of the University of Piraeus. The target of the thesis is to describe all the issues dealing with the field of shipwrecks both in the Greek sea and abroad. The first chapter mentions the definition of the shipwreck, its causes, the divisions and the methods being used so as to refloat them. The second chapter describes the techniques as for the pumping and the removal of the oils which are dispersed in the sea after the onset of a shipwreck, as well as the ways so as to treat an oil slick. The third chapter refers to law issues, with regards to the Greek, the E.U. and the International laws which states the ways that the upcoming problems of a shipwreck have to be treated. For instance, the conditions of Nairobi and that of I.M.O. are mentioned as for the responsibilities arising and the security cover of the enmeshed. The fourth chapter copes with shipwrecks across the world and the causes of the pollution of the sea. Moreover the issue of the decontamination as well as the penal responsibilities of the Sea Diamond shipwreck, close to the Santorini island in Greece, are mentioned. Finally, there is the chapter of conclusions.
