Abstract

The global shipping, from the early years of its appearance, has an important role in the global economy and the development of international prosperity. In recent years it seems to be under the influence of the largest recorded crisis. So there is a need, now more than ever, in order the shipping companies to remain viable, to reduce as much as possible operating costs while the hires remain low. It is therefore essential the introduction of a properly functioning and competitive transport system, in order to ensure economic growth in the shipping, with the lowest possible cost of business. Operating cost is affected by many factors, such as rules that protect the environment from pollution being caused by vessels, rules for the safety of seafarers, the use of new technologies and the fact that ships are getting even bigger in order to achieve economies of scale.
