Abstract

The present paper issues the level of health conditions in Latin America and the circumstances under these conditions exist. The Latin region shows enormous differences among its countries and between the regions in each country. A high life expectancy of nearly 74 years is observed comparing with other regions while maternal and infant deaths have declined remarkably over the last fifty years due to economic development of Latin American countries (although it remains lower than desired) and the evolution of medicine . Health systems are characterized by partitions and complexities posing difficult access. Access to drinking water seems to be in encouraging levels, however good hygiene rates are still in low levels, although significantly higher than the world average rate. There is also a reduction of the percent concerning communicable diseases due to coverage of the population with vaccination, some of them though (dengue, AIDS, malaria) remain at high levels when compared with developed countries such as U.S.A and European areas. The number of professional staff is relatively low compared with regions such as North America and the same situation is on concerning the proportion of GDP spent on health. At the third part of the paper, Chile, Colombia and Bolivia which are 3 representative countries of the Latin America region, are studied about the health conditions prevailing in them. The analysis of these representative countries can give the reader useful conclusions about the present situation in the wider region, but also about the vast differences that exist between these countries, proving that Latin America is characterized by high amounts of inequity.
