Minimization of the operation cost of a wind farm using firefly algorithm
This master thesis deals with the minimization of the cost which is invested in the function of a wind farm. To solve this problem the firefly algorithm is used. The way the algorithm works is based on how fireflies find their mate accounting for the brightness of any such insect. This algorithm is selected because it is very effective in comparison with other optimization techniques. The problem takes into account the number of the turbines they constitute the wind farm, the power that each one produces and the velocity of the wind which alters the change rate of the power. In order to prove the effectiveness of the algorithm, it is applied in a wind farm which consists 10, 20, 30 and 40 turbines. In this context an application was developed in MATLAB language. The user gives at each execution the number of the turbines he wants and the number of the iterations of the algorithm. The application produces various charts and for what values of velocity and power of the turbine is achieved the best operating cost of the wind farm
