Wi-MAX is one of the most famous technologies that have been proposed and implemented during the last few years in the field of wireless communications. Following the rapid technology development in all the fields of our societies, researchers in the field of communications constantly develop the existing protocols and technologies in order to satisfy, as much as possible, the growing needs of the consumers. In that framework, the main purpose of this thesis is to describe as detailed as possible the whole set of characteristics of this new technology that is known as Wi-MAX. The most important characteristics of its structure and architecture will be presented, along with the basic functions of the physical layer and the data link layer and some applications. Wi-MAX is, as it will be shown in the following, a protocol that combines a set of special characteristics in order to satisfy the needs of the modern man for constant communication in all levels.
