The purpose of this diploma thesis, is to study and analyze Smart Power Grids as well as modern communication technologies, which are a key axis for their operation and interconnection. Smart Grid, which will be of interest to us in Greece in the near future, focuses on the modernization of the existing power grid, with simultaneous upgrading and aiming at greater operational flexibility. Combined with the use of modern communications technologies, the development of smart power grid based on smart features will make it more efficient, manageable, controlled and environmentally friendly. In the first chapter of the thesis, is made an introduction to Smart Grids, indicating the main features and the technological axes. In the second chapter, the term Hyper-Grid is analyzed and its significance is described for Europe and the other Continents. In the third chapter, there is an extensive reference to Distributed Generation and Micro-Grids, which together with RES and smart meters, are constantly gaining ground in the energy landscape. The fourth chapter, concerns device communication (M2M) and its differences with telemetry. The fifth chapter, is dedicated to the Internet of Things (IoT) as well as to emerging technology, Narrow - Band IoT (NB - IoT) already established by telecommunication companies in Greece. The sixth chapter, describes all the technologies that can be used and exploited in Smart Grids. In the seventh chapter, we analyze the very interesting PLC technology, which will be of interest to us in the future. In the eighth chapter, is made reference to technological developments in the EU member states but also those concerning Greece. The final chapter, is dedicated to the conclusions that emerged from the dissertation.
