The shipping market is based on the empirical approach in comparison to long-term forecasts. The purpose of this dissertation is to present the tendency and the fluctuations being formed on the crude oil market by various factors under a vulnerable financial framework.
The oil market has crucial importance for tankers. Thus, in the first chapter is encompassed the historical developments, the global productivity, consumption, imports and exports of oil.
The second chapter commence with a brief introduction in maritime economics. Afterwards, it is analyzed the freight indicators and the determinants of supply and demand. At the end, it is mentioned the maritime cycles and its stages.
In the last chapter will be accomplished an extensive analysis and explanation of freight rates. The volatility on both spot and time-charter market will be shown using monthly data from 2010 to 2015. The investigation is conducted into three segments. Initially, time series display the configuration of freights throughout time. Then, it is determined, should it exist correlation between time-chartering and spot market. Moreover, it is presented the tendency on both categories. Finally, using the statistical tool of linear regression is made an effort to find the appropriate model that will predict short term freight rates.
