This thesis is focused on the economic effects of slow steaming on the ship-owner, the charterer, and the shipper. Emphasis has been placed on the effects of slow steaming on the shipper’s cost and the reconfiguration of his inventory, due to the longer transit times that slow steaming incurs.
In the first chapters, a theoretical approach on subjects such as the modern trends in shipping and global trade, the economic and environmental aspects of slow steaming as well as an analysis on inventory management took place.
Afterwards, in chapter 4, in order for the economic effects of slow steaming to be estimated, a cost model analysis was developed. In this model, a theoretical round trip and a theoretical type of container vessel were used, so as the costs of the ship owner, the charterer, and the shipper, could be calculated in various service speeds. Chapter 5 is orientated to the shipper’s perspective. A literature research was conducted focused on the effects of slow steaming on the shipper.
The conclusions that were reached after the completion of this research, alongside with the suggestions for further research on the subject, are depicted in the last chapter.
