Abstract

The present study deals with the influence of socioeconomic factors on mortality in Europe in 2007. More specifically, people aged 50 and over that participated in the first wave of the SHARE survey (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) in 2004 in eleven European countries (ranging from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean) are considered in order to assess the impact of socioeconomic factors such as income, wealth and educational level on the probability of their death during the period that elapsed until the second wave (2007). The survey was based on a representative sample that exceeded 30.000 people, focusing on issues such as family environment, family relationships, work, pension, financial security and health. The results provide useful reference points for the pursuit of alternative policies in the future and will continue to be strengthened as supplemented by subsequent research waves of SHARE. The aim of this dissertation is the approach and the understanding of the socioeconomic differences in various European countries that leading to mortality through descriptive analysis. The main conclusions of the analysis are the following: a) there are differences in mortality levels between countries that are related to factors other than socioeconomic circumstances and b) in all countries mortality is higher among people of lower socioeconomic status.
