Undoubtedly, the progress of science and culture depends heavily on technology. The technology has entered into many areas of our lives. The aim is to exploit it in order to offer us best quality and convenience in our daily lives. However, the use of technology has the corresponding price. This arises mainly from two reasons: 1) Humanity does not use the technology only for progress, because is looking forward to selfish purposes. 2) The use of technology is not placed in the absolutely correct scientific direction. If one of them or both of the above reasons occur, the results obtained are clearly destructive. The problems generated cause more damage instead of the expected benefits. Specifically, the inappropriate use of technology certainly brings enormous economic, moral, social damages, etc. In the first case, in which humanity does not utilize technology exclusively for its progress will not be analyzed because it is outside the scope of this work. We are interested in the second case in which the utilization of the technology is not in the correct scientific manner, and this is due to ignorance or worse to imperfect knowledge.
It is obvious that the current technology is based on the computer science. Let us consider how would was the technology, the current culture and the quality of our lives, if there were no computers. Who would it be the pace of progress? Certainly too slow. Therefore, computers and also the computer science contributes catalytically in every field of human activity.
Obviously modern medicine largely depends on the technology and especially on the computer science. Mankind make bad use of computers in research for the construction of chemical and microbiological weapons. This is an example that shows the misuse of technology and computer science, especially in medicine. Fortunately, however, this technology is also used for good purposes. Scientists use the computers in research and in manufacturing of new drugs, vaccines, in new surgical methods, in the study of DNA, etc. Also computers are essential in diagnosing diseases and help or suggest treatments in many difficult cases. Nowadays special robotic machines perform delicate surgeries with computer guidance. Generally, we can say that the computer is involved heavily in various fields and specialties of medicine, even in the field of computerization and management of medical information. Possibly a superficial analysis can lead to the erroneous conclusion that the computerization in the health sector is not as significant and of great importance as the computer science is necessary in the field of medical research and in the application of new medical methods. This conclusion is not valid because the proper organization and management of medical information is of utmost importance. Primarily it should be insured medical confidentiality. The proper organization of the information allows quick and timely recovery. There are medical cases where time is of very great importance. The integrity, consistency and completeness of the medical information is necessary in order to provide proper medical care and to draw the proper conclusions on statistical models and research, that will serve to further development of medical science.
This work involves the computerization of medical information in the field of dentistry. Specifically, the study shows, the analysis and the development of a modern dental information system. The purpose of this information system is to fully cover the needs of a private dental clinic or a simple dental surgery which will be tailored to the specifications of the Greek health system.
This information system has been developed based on the suggestions of Greek dentists. These suggestions have been implemented almost all. One of the innovative features that has this information system is that it allows the patient to interact with the system and manage the information concerning him. I note that has not depreciated the scientific background which fully exploited for the completion of the project.
On the computerization of the sensitive area of health should exclude any form of technological or other compromises. Many projects have failed or have not produced what was expected because of the unjustified technical compromises which should not have been done or because of the scientific incompetence of the project managers. I repeat that this dental information system mainly addressed to private dentists or private dental clinics. It was meaningless to develop dental software that appeals to a hospital, since it is obvious that already has its own dental software, which is part of the existing medical information system that is installed in the hospital project.
