Maritime tourism in its wider sense includes every activity which takes place on the
coasts and on the sea and it comprises a greater range of activities. One of the
branches of maritime tourism is the cruise, which is the principal subject of this
dissertation. Cruise tourism is becoming more and more popular and the
Mediterranean Sea alone is the second most important market after the Caribbean
Sea while Greece is the third most popular European cruise destination. During this
challenging financial crisis, the cruise sector reinforces significantly the economy of
Greece because it increases the revenues through collecting taxes, bringing
investments and contributing to the development of entrepreneurship. On the other
hand the main problem is the increase of the prices in services and goods in the
ports as well as the seasonal income of the employees. Greece despite its attraction
does not enjoy the economic benefits that it should due to the lack of infrastructure
compared to other countries. One of the main gates of entrance for tourists in
Greece is the port of Katakolo, which welcomes many thousands of visitors every
year. The natural beauty of this location, its strategic placement on the marine
routes of cruise ships and its proximity to ancient Olympia put Katakolo on the first
places of the most popular Greek cruise destinations. The arrivals of the cruise ships
have benefited enormously the area as more important infrastructure works are
being implemented while at the same time the local economy thrives since it is
dependent on the cruise sector.
