It is a fact that health expenditures worldwide have been soaring in the last decade, and governments proclaim that this increase is unjustifiable and harmful for the healthcare systems sustainability, and also the sustainability of the respective financial systems as a whole. International analysis of macro-economic indicators is the main element of economic evaluation of health care systems. During the last decades, the relation between public sector expenses, and therefore expenses on healthcare, and economic growth has caused great interest.
The aim of this thesis is to indicate a model of relationship between the healthcare expenses and the economic growth. Our effort is to find all these factors that affect health expenditure. Specifically, the issue examined here is the extent to which the real national gross product (GDP) are influenced by the expenses on hospital healthcare, the bed occupancy rate of acute care hospitals only, the hospitals per 100000 inhabitants and the population density per square km. To achieve this goal, we studied the statistics of four countries of the European Union (Germany, Greece, Spain and Italy) for a time – series of thirty years (1975 – 2005).
Reciprocation analysis with Panel Estimation is the econometric model used for the extraction of the results, a method estimated to be the most appropriate due to intertemporal and stratificated data.
