INTRODUCTION: The last decades a strong consiciousness has been created in the scientific world as well as in the society regarding the continuous degradation of the environmental quality.
The healthcare system, and more specifically the nursing care facilities, play a detrimental role in the environment due to waste produced.
AIM: The aim of this project is the cost calculation of the hospital waste management depending on the management type. This will be addressed by analyzing the content of the contracts that the outsourcing companies have signed, based on various criteria of the management process they will employ.
METHODOLOGY: We searched and recorded different contracts of “Diaugeia” website concerning hospitals (mainly public) and after adding the entries in an excel file, we analysed data such as type of contract, contract duration, type of waste, management company, management type, quantification unit, total quantity of waste, unit price, site of waste management and final disposal site. Then we performed a simple descriptive statistical analysis in order to calculate and capture the total costs of managing medical waste according to the different contract features. CONCLUSION: Finally we concluded that calculating the cost of hospital waste management based on the published data uploaded is not conclusive, mainly due to the insufficient information concerning various stages of waste management and to the lack of organization in the structure of the management system The cost of waste management is a major expense of the state budget in the health sector. Therefore the existence of an organized management - monitoring system considering the bureaucracy process (assigning of the project to a company) as well as the disposal of the hospital waste in appropriate landfills is a mandatory necessity.
