Abstract

In this thesis we study the implementation of Software Defined Networks in existing LTE architecture. SDN is a way to decouple control plane from user plane in networking. To achieve that new hardware and software need to be introduced. The main newly entered piece of hardware is the OpenFlow (OF) controller, which is responsible for converting a network from hardware defined to software defined. OF protocol is also essential for SDN networks to exist. Also OF switches are important parts of reshaping the design of networks, either as virtual switches or as physical. SDN could give cellular operators greater control over their equipment, simplify network management, and introduce value-added services. SDN can enable carriers to distribute data-plane rules over multiple, cheaper network switches, reducing the scalability pressure on the packet gateway and enabling flexible handling of traffic that stays within the cellular network.
