The depletion of land resources, the increasing demand for oil, gas and minerals and the development of mining technologies in the recent years, have made the seabed mining industry, center of global attention. Today, we have to face a number of challenges in order to make this industry work for the benefit of all mankind. These challenges refer to the necessity of filling the gaps of the international legal framework in order to protect the environment and human life. Moreover, in order to maintain international peace and security, there are crucial prerequisites such as the respect of the international law by all states and the conduct of activities in spirit of cooperation and solidarity. This study aims to analyze the relevant legal framework, to identify the environmental problems and other related contemporary issues and last, to draw conclusions regarding the required global actions.
