The last years there is a great research activity in the area of wireless sensor networks. These consist of scattered autonomous sensors to monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, atmospheric pressure or the intrusion in a region of interest. Through cooperation these data are being transferred over the network in a specific location, which is usually a base station which collects and processes them. But due to some functional, energy and design limitations of the nodes of such a network, new challenges are created in optimizing network performance.
In order to be able to harvest the monitoring data, the devices form a network that has a limited life. In most cases, the purpose of monitoring and duration of network life affect each other. In this paper there will be a collection and analysis of the various technologies and algorithms associated with monitoring issues and duration of network life, as well as ranking them according to the application and their characteristics.
