Abstract

Green shipping is a relatively new phenomenon but will have a major influence on the maritime world in the coming years. It will perhaps be the greatest challenge for the industry and must compensate for the damage done to the environment over many, many years. This study contains five chapters and attempts to analyze and evaluate the consequences of green shipping. The first chapter (Brief historical retrospective and definitions) deals with the principles of the up until now, slow evolution of green shipping. It tries to define its scope, which covers almost everything to do with the design and operation of a ship. Chapter two (Current evolution) covers the progress of green shipping in recent years. Such progress has accelerated following the signing of the Paris Agreement on climate change together with its very fast diffusion in all fields with positive news and reports. The third chapter (The relationship between maritime commerce and the environment) attempts to provide the framework for this strange long term relationship and to prove the inevitable necessity for the maritime industry to participate in the global effort to limit planet warming. It describes certain initiatives already undertaken in this direction. Chapter four (Legislation and regulation) examines the existing legislative framework. It describes the difficulties in the decision making process due to delays anticipated by the relevant institutions involved in committing to and subsequently activating an agreement. The fifth chapter (Consequences) analyzes and evaluates the impact green shipping will have on the commercial maritime world. It covers the long term consequences on the legal, technological, economic, environmental and managerial aspects of shipping. Lastly, the concluding paragraph considers all of the above mentioned issues and presents the case for the maritime industry to urgently accept the clear message from society in general to adopt green shipping without further delay.
