Abstract

Although Greece continues to experience economic turmoil where the economic environment is unstable and the phenomenon of the economic and social crisis gets deeper, the maritime shipping industry remains a sector with national competitive advantage that contributes to modern society and economy. In the current economic downturn, the need for cooperation between businesses in order to allow the industry to maintain its strong competitive advantage has led to the development of clusters. This study focuses on the maritime clusters and specifically those growing in the wider region of Piraeus, the most important center of the Greek maritime industry. In particular, the survey aims to explore the possibilities of developing a maritime cluster in the region of Piraeus by recording, through in-depth interviews, the opinion of the industry's executives. Initially, the literature review presents some information related to the concept of clusters. The following section refers to the shipping industry and particularly its connection with the clusters, while respective examples of their application are cited. Next, follows the theoretical and empirical investigation of the cluster case in Piraeus. Lastly, the thesis concludes with the research findings.
