Purpose: This research study primarily examined the significance of the following categories of criteria for assessing ship suppliers: quality, price, availability of product- service and adaptability of supplier. Two criteria from the above mentioned categories are also investigated in more depth. Another aim was to collect the main ports worldwide where shipping companies prefer to supply their ships.
Methodology: Subjects were recruited from shipping companies located in Greece and Cyprus. This research study was quantitative and involved the use of a self-completion questionnaire. The questionnaire was based on the already validated, published research of Dickson (1966), White (1978) and Barbarosoglu και Yazgac (1997). Nevertheless, changes were carried out to the original questionnaire to make it more applicable for ship suppliers’ evaluation. A total of 50 questionnaires were distributed to different shipping companies. Of those, 41 questionnaires were returned achieving the high response rate of 82%.
Findings: This study showed that quality was the most highly rated category followed by
price and availability of product-service. Adaptability of supplier scored last among the examined general categories. More specifically, the criterion agreed delivery time scored best, followed closely by the criterion service in emergency case. 84% of respondents prefer the port of Singapore for the supply of ships. The second and third bigger proportion received the ports of the Netherlands, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and the port of Piraeus, respectively.
