Abstract

This Master thesis is a presentation of digital TV via the IP (Διαδίκτυο Protocol) protocol known as IPTV (Διαδίκτυο Protocol Television) focusing on the part of the Metro Ethernet Network and Access Network. IPTV is the transmission of television signals over a broadband connection using the IP protocol within a closed private network and not the public Διαδίκτυο More specifically this thesis initially describes the definition of IPTV, its business benefits and its commercial use. After that it displays the basic theoretical concepts used in the transmission of television signals through the broadband network and the MPEG encodings and gives a general description of an IPTV network presenting the main reasons for turning to IPTV. Then it provides a condensed presentation of the distribution network of the IPTV service and a technical description of an IPTV system emphasizing on the Metro Ethernet Network and on the Access Network. The basic protocols used in the transmission IPTV network are explained. Furthermore, a reference is made to the quality of service and to the quality of customer experience. Finally, the advantages conferred by the IPTV are presented. IPTV is considered the future of digital television, for is provided by telecommunications providers bundled with VoIP telephony and ADSL or VDSL. The development of ADSL and VDSL technology result in better image quality (High Definition), ease of access and many possibilities in an interactive customer experience. Some of the services provided via IPTV are providing digital content and various other modern TV services such as time shifted TV, parental control, pay-per-view, personal video recording and Video on Demand.
