We have reached a point where the new technologies are one of the most important factors of our daily life. Nowadays, all sectors of society, all productive sectors and even governmental agencies rely on information technology and new technologies for their daily operations.
Tourism is no exception to this, as it has based its rapid development mainly on technology. The entry of technology in all areas of tourism, from transport to dining, revolutionized the industry. Greece has made significant progress in all tourist areas, but it is necessary to do more in order to become more competitive. The penetration of technology in SMEs is on a good, but not yet quite satisfactory level since businesses adopted it quite late.
The purpose of this dissertation is to present the role and development of information systems in the tourism sector and to analyze the way in which technology and information technology penetrated in tourism and the changes that is brought. Although it is impossible to exhaust such a vast subject in such a few pages, the paper attempts to give the best representative picture possible.
