Over 90% of the global trade is carried by ships. Unavoidably, marine casualties and oil spills occur in the course of the transportation.
The protection of the marine environment and the maritime safety are crucial matters. In view of the need to preserve the environment and enhance the safety in the maritime transportation, regulations and initiatives have been adopted by various international as well as European organizations.
The scope of the present thesis is to outline the legal frame and the initiatives adopted by the International Maritime Organization and the European Union in the field of environmental protection from pollution caused by marine activities and of the marine safety. The thesis will also include a comparative analysis of their regulations and actions.
