Hospital care absorbs the largest share of health expenditure in modern health systems and
the efficiency of the hospital sector significantly determines the fulfillment of health needs.
The high hospital costs had led in the past many health economists to investigate the
determinants of the hospital expenditure. However, the structure of public hospitals, the
structure of both the public and private health sector as well as the structure of the insurancehealth
system of a country affect and shape significantly the hospital costs and hamper the
accurate investigation of the determinants of those factors that affect the formation and
evolution of the hospital expenditure.
The main purpose of this study was the analysis of hospital infrastructure in the public health
sector in Greece for the year 2013. In particular, this study focused on the analysis of public
hospital resources, their distribution based on geographical and population criteria, the
analysis of public hospitals costs and the investigation of the determinants of the public
hospitals expenditure.
The results of this study showed the existence of geographical and demographic inequalities
in terms of structures, staffing and infrastructure of public hospitals. Furthermore, analysis
of the data showed that the total hospital costs per health district seem to be affected
significantly by the total number of hospitalization days of patients in public hospitals while
the largest proportion of this expenditure relates to staff salaries.
