Abstract

This paper, deals with the presentation of foreign direct investment in Greece over the last twenty years. The basic ideas related to foreign direct investment, their characteristics and types, the incentives and disincentives for their realization, as well as inflows of foreign direct investment in Greece are being analyzed in this paper. In first place, we present the theoretical framework concerning foreign direct investments and comprise the elements which characterize them such as the motives for their embodiment, different theories that have been developed over time and factors affecting them. After that, begins the specifical analysis for Greece. To start with, we analyze not only macroeconomic factors that affect foreign direct investment and prevail in Greece, but also the main obstacles for the development of foreign direct investment. What is more, we proceed in the diagrammatic analysis of the evolution not only of foreign direct investment, but also for other main economic data which are decisive for the evolution of foreign direct investment in Greece and in other countries that are in economic recession in recent years.Gross domestic product, the minimum level of wages, import and export data are also presented. Finally, there is an extensive presentation of the foreign direct investment sector in Greece during the last decade. This presentation highlights the development of FDI, the sectors that are more interesting and attractive for FDI, in Greece and the countries that invest the most in Greece. By the end we analyze the key areas of foreign direct investment in Greece and their development prospects. By the conclusion of this paper, we report our thoughts from all the elements above, about the economic situation of Greece until now and about the prospects for the development of FDI in the country.
