The following assignment aims to define, comment and clarify the role and function that classification societies have across the entire spectrum of the maritime industry, economy and the insurance as they are one of the most important elements of the certification of a ship at all stages of its construction.
Their organizational structure and mission is distinguished across the maritime industry. The
rules issued are always in line with the international regulations and conventions; and seek the safety of ships, life at sea and the prevention of maritime environment pollution while the characteristics of the ISM code are also analyzed.
Furthermore, reference is made in the registers and advantages and disadvantages of each category of registration through procedures in which the owner chooses the flag which the ship will carry.
The processes in which a ship acquires, retains or loses its class are also analyzed, depending on the extent to which the International Regulations are obeyed and compiled with. In order for this determination of conformity to take place, some inspections by classification societies are carried out at various stages of the construction of the ship but also at a later course.
Finally, it includes information about the major classification societies in the world and their constitution, with special reference to the Hellenic Register of Shipping.
