Family businesses and innovative products development is the main subject of
this paper. Family businesses, not only in Greece but also throughout the world,
constitute the keystone of the economy. The main goal of most family businesses is their
continuous development with a view to their transfer under the most favorable conditions
to the next generation of successors. In this paper is examined thoroughly the issue of
innovation and new products development by family businesses. Initially an introduction
of family businesses and entrepreneurship is presented and then the concept of innovation
is examined. The process of innovation activity is hampered by several factors, such as
the fear of failure, the introversion, the relationships developed within the enterprise, the
external environment, etc. Despite the obstacles, successful employee motivation and
empowerment of senior management to them, makes possible to lead family business
towards growth and innovation. Particular reference is made to the process of new
products development by family businesses. It is also examined the role of new products
development by family businesses in the current economic recession. As an example of
real case of family business, Stayia Farm and the innovation that introduced in the sector
of apiculture products, is presented. Finally, this paper concludes by listing the main
findings of recent scientific research, published in international journals and investigating
the relationship between family businesses and the process of developing new, innovative
products. The study concludes with the presentation of the main conclusions of the
investigation.
