Shipping is probably the most extensive and internationalized industry, as its nature allows or requires the involvement and participation of a wide range of attitudes, culture and practices. Important role in this growth seems to play the ISM Code, which if applied properly in both the maritime companies and in other operational frameworks, will improve the supply of affordable services to end customers and will help το create a strong system of TQM. Besides, the ISM Code itself is based on the general principles and functions of the ISO and its correct application is possible to offer concrete advantages in relation to TQM in shipping.
The international safety management code (the ISM Code) has been established to cut down the occurrence of human errors by creating a safety-oriented organizational culture for the maritime industry. The ISM Code requires that a company should provide safe practices in ship operation and a safe working environment and establish safeguards against all identified risk. The fundamental idea of the ISM Code is that companies should continuously improve safety. The commitment of the top management is essential for implementing a safety-oriented culture in a company.
This paper will try to explore how an efficient system of Total Quality Management can be applied in the shipping industry and in naval work in conjunction with the implementation of the ISM Code, which is the most improved and reliable measure to prevent marine accidents which lead not only to environmental pollution but also to the loss of human lives. Regarding the empirical analysis of the issue there will be a detailed description and critical investigation of the matter, through real accidents and how they were addressed.
