This master thesis investigates how concentration and competition affects stability and profitability, using a sample of 38 banking institutions from 7 countries of the European Union. The basic question that we attempt to answer is the ambiguous effect that market competitiveness has in the banking system. Competition leads to a more stable system or does it lead towards instability and eventually shows how fragile the system is. The bibliography is still obscure concerning this question. Based on the empirical economic analysis in which we use control variables for competitiveness, stability and profitability of the banks that consist our sample, we tend to give more support to the Competition Stability view.
