This thesis deals with the presentation of the major international governmental and non- governmental organisms and the study of the institutional role they hold in modern shipping. The aim of this thesis is to identify the existing international governmental and non governmental organisms that are related either directly or indirectly with maritime transport, while additionally an attempt will be made so as to analyse and assess both the institutional role and the impact entailed in shipping.
As the analysis shows, the role of the major international governmental and non governmental organizations in modern shipping is crucial, with existing international organizations influencing the institutional and economic environment of modern shipping to a satisfactory extent. The most important effects refer to maritime safety, navigation, loads, transportation, technologies, protection of the marine environment, and a host of legal issues for the global maritime industry, like state aid for the yards, financial aid for shipowners, as well as the assessment of the economy of the oceans.
The challenges for the future of the sector refer to the maritime safety and the efficient implementation of regulatory frameworks, the interests of European shipping, the problem of piracy, the instability and uncertainty in the shipping market due to the crisis, as well as the deepening policy on state aid in maritime transport, maritime employment, and of course the marine environment, the atmospheric emissions from ships and focus on fossil fuels as the main source of energy.
