This study focuses on the institutional framework for environmental protection in ports. Specific references are made to the way in which the port operation burden on the environment and the institutional framework in which the ports must comply in order to tackle environmental pollution. The purpose of this paper is to present the environmental quality management standards and other European directives governing the ports. In the context of implementation of the work scope is examined as an example study the Piraeus port.
