This diploma thesis is part of the graduate program in Finance & Banking Management of University of Piraeus. Subject of this study is the banking sector and more specifically the influence of current account balance in banks’ funding structure.
My interest for banking sector stems from its great contribution in modern economic growth model and social welfare. Banks are companies with special characteristics, which may generate false incentives in both shareholders and management, driving into conflicts between the groups of interest and that may seriously affect the economic progress.
The state recognizes this danger and creates supervision rules which give greater importance in banks’ structural fundamentals. My interest is pointed in the effect of the macroeconomic factors, especially the current account balance, in banks’ funding structure.
The implementation of my research contains data from 34 states – members of Eurozone and OECD for the period 1997 – 2012 and the following estimation of econometric model in order to investigate the extent to which the selected variables affecting the banks’ funding sources.
