The health sector is one of the most complex and important in the economic life of each country. Each state has as objective the efficient provision of health services at the lowest possible cost. But in most cases this was not feasible as possible. The 90s and especially in the early years of the new millennium the reckless overspending and lack of action to increase prices ejected costs with devastating consequences for the population and budget of any state.
This thesis deals with pharmaceutical and medical costs in European Union countries. At first mention the basics on pharmaceutical and medical expenses as well as analyze the historical development of the member - states of the European Union. Then, using OECD statistics starting appropriate conclusions both among the euro area countries and in comparison with countries in other continents (USA, Japan).
Then we focus on seven European Union countries (Denmark, Great Britain, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy) with reliable statistics the period 1988 to 2009. These countries were chosen because of their reliability and diversity (geographically) and the time period is of particular importance, comparing the situations of economic boom to the first signs of the crisis.
Finally, export the results econometric model used is the regression analysis Panel Estimation, method deemed most appropriate given the presence of both longitudinal and cross-section data.
