DSpace is an open source program, which is primarily used at the
Institutional Repositories in order to be managed at the best way
possible with the aim to be easily recoverable and accessible by the
users who search them. It is currently used globally by 1782
organisations and applications have already began to be designed to
allow its use by small portable devices, such as mobile phones.
DSpace provides a basic infrastructure, on which post data can be
stored together with various vocabulary shapes and its work flow is
divided in 3 basic stages: submission, approval and, finally,
publication. On the other hand, users are divided into categories with
different authorizations each depending on the use and rank they
possess at the Institutional Repositories. Because of DSpace, the
open access Institutional Repositories have now become a reality for
Greek academic institutions. Officially, in Greece, 12 universities are
using it including mainly diploma theses but also doctoral dissertations.
Although Greek institutional repositories are few compared to the
numerous universities that exist in Greece, the data they use are
disproportionately many, 52 in total, which indicates the non common
policy in managing their repositories.
