The scope of this project was to create a traceability system for packing materials (bottles, caps and stickers) for a home care products factory in Athens, Greece. For confidentiality reasons the name of the company will not be mentioned. For this project it was decided to calculate the time needed in order to record all the necessary data for a quick and accurate traceability system. The factor of time is very important in cases, for example, where a specific batch of a product must be traced. Additionally, the time the operators would spend to write down all the information needed was also a concern in this project.
The research was focused in the comparison of a manual method where the staff of the factory had to fill in forms with the necessary information of every packing material used, as well as an electronic method where the codes of the materials would be scanned with PDAs without the need to manually write down any information.
The survey took place in 3 departments of the plant, which were studied separately in order to be easier to compare the results of the manual and the electronic system. These departments where the department of plastic production, the finishing lines and the silo which feed the finishing lines with bottles and caps. The comparison of the two methods of the project showed that the electronic method with the use of PDA and the appropriate software which was installed for this project, saved the workers 3.69 up to 13.21 seconds in every case where data would be recorded, depending on the workstation. An important advantage of the electronic method was the elimination of mistakes as the PDAs had the advantage of automatic verification of the data scanned from the packing materials with those of the specifications of each product.
During the application of this traceability system there were a number of problems that had to be solved. These problems concerned the pilot function of the system with the
large number of employees that where involved, and more specifically the operators of the production lines.
The final outcome of the project was considered to be successful, since with the electronic system data and product batches were able to retrieved considerably faster and with great accuracy. On the contrary, with the manual system a member of the workforce had to spend a large amount of time to find all the information needed for a recall or a recovery.
