Analysis and consideration of factors that govern the developmental processes in industrialized countries prove that the existing/ongoing environmental crisis stems from the financial model, which has never been compatible with nature’s carrying capacity.
The collapse of the financial model combined with the constantly increasing environmental problems begets the need to invest in sustainable development, a concept that aims at the simultaneously progress of the financial, environmental and social developmental goals.
The route towards sustainable development is adopted by production packaging industries with the aim to ensure their survival in the long-term future. The guidelines towards the development of “sustainable packaging” are set by the ecological or green design. Application of these guidelines leads to optimization of the environmental output of packaging.
The aim/purpose of this thesis is to highlight the importance of the application of Ecological Design requirements, through the comparison of the environmental output of two ecologically designed transport crates and another one that does not fulfill these requirements.
This comparison is based upon the method of Life Cycle Analysis, which focuses on the impact assessment of transport crates Life Cycle. The environmental management software CES-Edupack and SimaPro 7.1.8 were utilized for this assessment process.
The results obtained indicate that the ecologically designed transport containers exhibit a significantly better environmental output. Based on these results, suggestions that aim at improving the environmental output and enhancing the ecological profile of these crates are presented.
