This postgraduate thesis investigates the application of flipped classroom model in
teaching Modern Greek Language in the 2nd grade of Junior High School, by
conducting suitably planned action research. The flipped classroom model, a subcategory
of blended learning, is a teaching approach that reverses the traditional
teaching structure, as the presentation of new content is transferred from the
classroom to the home, supported by technology, while practising the new knowledge
is transferred from the home to the classroom, by carrying out activities that meet the
individual needs of the student.
The application of flipped classroom in school education is an innovative teaching
approach, which, according to international bibliography, helps to save teaching hours
that can be used for carrying out creative activities, aimed at improving the individual
performance of each student. The planning of activities that meets the individual
needs of the students and the provision of direct and individual feedback enhance the
degree of students’ engagement in the teaching process and develop their motivation
for learning.
To investigate the effects of flipped classroom in this postgraduate thesis:
- An educational intervention lasting 8 weeks was planned, concerning the
Modern Greek Language class in the 2nd grade of Junior High School.
- Part of the educational activities which are traditionally conducted in the
classroom were digitalized with the support of the Learning Management
System (LMS) Moodle.
- Action research was planned and implemented, during which:
• the educational intervention was applied to two groups of students, the
control group, in which traditional teaching was used, and the
experimental group, in which flipped classroom was implemented.
• research tools were used to collect research data on improving learning
results, saving and exploiting teaching hours, boosting motivation and
the degree of students’ engagement in the learning process.
