WiMAX standard is a network technology that provides wireless broadband internet access, services that can be compared with wireless cellular networks such as 3G and 4G, while using a very low cost. The WiMAX standard specifications are related to the Physical Layer and the Medium Access Control Layer, offering manufacturers and WiMAX network providers interoperability and enabling them to use different implementations at upper levels. WiMAX standard moves in the same direction in terms of Quality of Service (QoS). There are specific requirements on WiMAX QoS categories that are defined by the standard, but scheduling algorithms, which classify time specifications and decide packets’ coming from upper levels priority, are left to manufacturer’s discretion.
The objective of this thesis is to study the behavior and performance of the network using three schedulers that have been implemented in ns3 network simulator, to test their effectiveness under conditions of large network traffic and to recommend which one of them is appropriate in each case. As shown in the conclusions section, each of the three algorithms lags or outperforms the others in different areas so none of them can be considered the most effective in total.
