Abstract
The contemporary reliability systems have reached such a level of complexity that the evaluation of the exact system reliability (survival probability), is almost computationally intractable. Therefore special attention has been given in the development of simple reliability bounds which provide also efficient approximations of the exact value. The most favorable reliability bounds appearing in the international bibliography are the multiplicative bounds (Esary and Proschan) and the exponential bounds (Poisson type). The purpose of the present dissertation is
a. to explain, by the aid of specific examples, why the evaluation of the exact system reliability is infeasible or extremely time consuming, even for middle size systems b. to present the most important bounds of the reliability literature c. to carry out numerical calculations and comparisons of several bounds, for specific classes of systems and
d. to deal with some open questions of a specific class of bounds.
