The aim of this work is to study how the Greek population and the in-immigrants are
distributed in the 325 Kallikratis municipalities of the country for the period 1996-2001 using
data deriving from the 2001 census of Greece. Specifically, this work aims to identify the
factors that explain the internal migration index of in-migrants to Kallikratis municipalities
and examine how spatial patterns affect them. For this reason, appropriate statistical methods
and spatial analysis techniques that can contribute to the results, have been used.
The first part of the study deals with the concept of internal migration, its historical
dynamics and the administrative subdivisions of the country. In addition, by using methods
such as Descriptive Statistic, Linear Regression, Multiple Regression and Multivariate
Analysis technique the phenomenon of internal migration and the relations among the factors
that affect it are approached.
Moreover, the Spatial Autocorrelation of internal migration is examined. This method
basically focuses on the investigation of regional differentiations rather than of uniformity.
Furthermore, the application of Geographically Weighted Regression has been described.
Finally, the relevant maps have been constructed bared on the use of Geographic Information
Systems GIS.
