Emotional Intelligence is defined as the ability that allows us to use our
emotions effectively.
As part of this master thesis we will try to answer the following questions:
Do we need the emotional intelligence? Can it provide what it promises? Can it
guide business leaders to make the right decisions and companies to cope with the
rapid changes in the modern global economy? Can it help business leaders in
overcoming the financial crisis?
To begin with, we analyzed the concept and the definition of Emotional
Intelligence based on modern theories of Goleman, Mayer, Salovey & Caruso, Bar-
On and Goleman, Boyatzis & Rhee using scientific bibliography and articles.
This analysis showed that the concept of Emotional Intelligence includes five
major components: empathy, self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation and social
skills.
Furthermore, this work attempts to highlight the role of emotional intelligence
in leadership and whether it is necessary in the workplace. Emotional Intelligence
may be the key to the leader’s success by highlighting his abilities and the abilities of
his subordinates. The correct application of the emotional intelligence leads to moral
leadership. A successful and charismatic leader has the virtue of managing his
emotions. He also has self-regulation and can provide positive influence to his
employees. On the other hand, the lack of emotional intelligence, which is equivalent
to the lack of social responsibility and morality, leads to «toxic» leaders.
Moreover, an analysis of the global financial crisis is made by making a detailed
description of the causes and the effects on the real economy. We also highlight the
role of emotional intelligence in overcoming the financial crisis. Leaders with
emotional intelligence during the financial crisis are capable of boosting both
individuals’ and companies’ confidence in order to survive in a highly competitive
environment and overcome the obstacle of the financial crisis.
Finally, we examined the example of the successful «Apple Inc», as well as the
example of the failed «WorldCom Inc» in order to provide an empirical support to the
theory used in this work.
