This study examined the behavior of the sales of three pharmaceutical products in the private pharmaceutical market of Greece using the method of time series decomposition. These products are Aerolin, Spiriva and Pulmicort and are all used in the treatment of bronchial asthma (BA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The study investigated the existence of seasonality and predicted the future behavior of sales. At first, basic aspects of BA and COPD were presented and epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical characteristics and therapeutical approaches were referred to for both clinical entities. The various categories of pharmaceutical products used in the treatment of BA and COPD were also presented, with their different mechanisms of action, their ways of administration, their side-effects and the most commonly used medications. Furthermore, the seasonal patterns in the exacerbations of BA and COPD and their relation to certain signal events were studied. Finally, using the method of time series decomposition, this study empirically examined the behavior of the sales of Aerolin, Spiriva and Pulmicort in the private pharmaceutical market of Greece, using data from 2004 to 2009. The existence of seasonality in sales (in accordance with the observed seasonality in the exacerbations of BA and COPD) was investigated and future behavior of sales was predicted for the next three years.
