The term “supply chain" is a complex concept that includes the design and management from the point of production to the point of consumption. It is the part of Logistics that designs, implements and controls the efficient and effective normal and reverse chain and storage of products, services and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption, in order to meet customer requirements. Manufacturing and inventory control aims to find a balance between the shortage of the available inventory and the existence of available goods in order to meet demand on the market. Thus, the above principles and procedures have direct application in health units. In private hospitals, contrary to public ones, the Greek legislation concerning supplies is not implemented. They acquire medical supplies after market investigation and negotiation, taking into account not only financial factors but also quality, and succeed in bargaining for better prices. In public hospitals, on the other hand, such market mechanisms are absent. The purpose of the study was both observation and objective quantification of the phenomenon. The observation would confirm the initial concept (better practice and supply chain management in private hospitals) and the quantification-via a questionnaire-based study-would highlight the differences of public and private sector in the field of medical supplies. Useful conclusions were derived, such as malfunction of the public sector regarding significant deficiencies in medical equipment, delay in the completion of orders as well as inadequate quality and quantity. Finally, hospital employee’s attitudes and beliefs of day-to-day practice and effectiveness of the departments involved in the management of supplies are also indirectly being demonstrated.
