According to the popular doctor, Gill Wylie (1877), hospitals tend to harm rather than benefit the individual since most of them are likely to constitute a harmful environment of degradation in different ways: they might fail in presenting a good organization system and respond appropriately to their obligations and responsibilities towards the society and the social environment. This picture alters with the rapid development of technology and hospitals are becoming the priesthood of modern medicine by providing a high level of health services for humans. However, new multi-dimensional economical, social and especially environmental aspects are revealed due to the combination of various changes in the geopolitical arena of the country in the recent decades, such as the growth of large urban centers, the constant improvement of human living conditions, the changes in consumption patterns etc. The Increase in the volume of the hazardous waste, including medical waste, is perceived as the main factor of environmental degradation. As a result, discussions on the effective management of medical waste are exacerbated in recent years. The hazardous medical waste is carriers of pathogenic micro-organisms and their uncontrollable disposal poses risks not only for the public health but also for the environment. The sustainable management of the HMW focuses on minimizing the derived quantities, their proper separation, the reuse and recycling, the reduction of cost management, the limitation of final residue and the environmental friendly disposal. Taking into account all the aforementioned, this study was focused on the detailed description and presentation of the methods and sources of production, the quality composition, the derived quantities, the methods of treatment and the risks which posed by improper management of medical waste. To a certain extent, the legislative and institutional framework is the guide and the springboard for the rational management of this kind of waste. All things considered that, the sterilization with all its aspects, is the most reliable method of treatment of the HMW. Furthermore, a financial and technical research is presented in order to describe the creation of a modern and stable unit of sterilization in Attica, a facility that does not exist, and its construction will contribute substantially to the limited use of other methods (incineration), non-environmental friendly methods with huge cost.
