The knowledge of children of school age in regard to various health issues is very important aiming at the prevention of occurrence of various diseases. Flu is very often in the children of school age and it is considered to be a disease, the frequency of which could decrease considerably with the acquisition of suitable knowledge and the application of effective measures of individual hygiene. The object of this study, was the improvement or not of the knowledge of children of school age in regard to the flu after the intervention of an educational program. Moreover, was investigated the role of certain demographic characteristics in regard to the knowledge of students before the application of educational program. The study population consisted of 116 graders aged 8-13 years in schools of first degree education of County of Attica (Elefsina and Aspropirgos). The response rate was 100%. The mean percent of correct answers before the application of educational program was 73.1% (±15), while afterwards was 88.4% (±12), presenting statistically significant increase (p<0.001), a fact that declares the effectiveness of the educational program. Moreover, it was found that children that had discussed with their schoolteachers about flu (p=0.006), children that they had discussed with their family/friends about flu (p=0.002), Greek children (p=0.05) and children of higher age (p=0.02) had more knowledge. The present study constitutes a fundamental step in the estimate of effectiveness of educational programs in regard to the knowledge of children of school age on health issues. The important improvement of knowledge of children declares the necessity of application of appropriate educational programs in the Elementary schools aiming at the increase of knowledge of children and the improvement of their health situation. The adoption of individual health measures and health education constitute fundamental conditions of reduction of frequency of occurrence of various diseases, such as the flu, particularly in children of school age.
