The purpose of this study is to estimate the rates of screening activities for cervical and breast cancer of the female population in the area of Lakonia County, to explore the influences of social factors on the use of screening tests and to estimate the influence of the regular annual gynecologic examination on the participation in these screening activities. A survey on screening for cervical and breast cancer was organized and conducted in the Municipality of Faridos in Lakonia County, from 01/4/10 to 31/5/10. Data were obtained through home visits and by completing a questionnaire. A statistical analysis of the data was performed. It was found that in our study's sample, although 8 out of 10 women have undergone Pap test at some point in their lives (80.8%), only 5 out of 10 participated in regular screening for cervical cancer (48.7%). In case of mammography it was found that 6 out of 10 women have undergone mammography at some point in their lives (63.2%) but only 3.5 out of 10 have regular participation in the mammographic screening (36.8%). Regular participation in screening activities wasn't found to be influenced by demographic characteristics. It was observed, however, that unmarried women without a history of childbirth, less educated, unemployed or employed in agriculture are less likely to have undergone a Pap test. Women with a history of at least two births are four times more likely to have undergone mammography at some point in their lives. A correlation check between the two screening activities revealed that women > 40 years old, who participate in screening for cervical cancer regularly, have an increased probability (x 31.5) to undergo regular annual mammography. It was also found that women who visit regularly, annually, a gynecologist are more likely to participate regularly in screening for cervical cancer (x 62) and breast cancer (x 23.5). The results of this study confirm the low rates of participation in screening for cervical and breast cancer of the women of Greece. The profile of the woman who should be the aim of health educational programmes and health promoting interventions is partially outlined (unmarried women without a history of birth, lower education, unemployed or employed in the agricultural sector). It is also worthy of note the importance of annual gynecological visit for the participation of women in the screening for breast and cervical cancer. These results can give rise to further research.
