This dissertation is about the issue of the logical investor in stock markets, commonly known as homo economicus. The assumption of homo economicus is starting to be argued, due to the extreme and inexplicable phenomena noticed in international markets, especially the ones known as bubbles. A number of theories, each with a different base, are trying to explain these phenomena. Three of them are presented in this essay, through review of literature, surveys and critiques. These are behavioral economics, neuroeconomics and psychoanalysis. An analysis of their basic findings is reported, as well as, their effect on human behavior. A comparison is made so as to examine their strengths and weaknesses, aiming to the development of a unifying theory, composed of elements from all those issues.
