One of the most important issues that speculate modern Greece and other European countries the last decade is the use of drugs. This problem is associated with a variety of causative factors such as social, economic, biological, psychological and familial. The participation degree of these factors differs from individual to individual as far as the stage of the initiation, continuation of the use and dependence is concerned. That is the reason why prevention is an extremely important issue but also a hard one. In that importance, the importance of the prevention, this paper is emphasizing. Neither illness nor disorder has ever been fought only with medicines or with the social work. Only through prevention, the measures taken from the authorities or the public institutions and the holistic behaviour of the society, can actually, a significant improvement in health and prosperity of the population, take place. The Prevention Centres of OKANA have their own special role in this process. For example, in the school population – which is the main target group of Prevention Centers - the use of drugs through time (1984-2004) has increased. The greatest accrual took place between 1984 and 1998 and then, between 1988 and 2004 a small reduction has occurred. In 1988 the 19,8% of the boys, aged between 14 and 17, and the 11,1% of the girls has taken drugs, even once in their life. In 2003 the corresponding percentage was decreased in 13,3% through boys and in 6% through girls (EKTEPN, 2005). If it is taken into consideration that the first Prevention Centre was founded in 1996 and that between 1997 and 2000 many Prevention Centres began their operation, it appears that the work of prevention presents first clues of effects and changes in the wider picture of the drug problem. The observed reduction coincides with a very fertile period considering the creation of prevention services and this makes the continuation and the further aid of work of prevention services even more imperative.
