Tourism -- Greece ; Cruise shipsAbstract
The cruise industry is one of the most rapidly developing industries worldwide, with double the development rate than that of tourism. Over the past few years the cruise came to the centre of the financial interest for Greece and is considered to be the business activity which can attract funds from abroad and constitute a significant source of development within the country. Many are the people, in fact, who consider the cruise as the comparative advantage of our country directly linked with its historic presence and geographical position. In Greece, the cruise sector faces problems stemming from a dysfunctional and bureaucratic framework, but also an insufficiency of the state mechanism. Although the repeal of the 'capotage' which took place from 2010 until 2014 was considered by many as the basic cause of delay of the utilization of the multiple advantages that the cruise has to offer, it uncovered other problems which we will try to pinpoint and analyze in the fourth chapter of the present project. The benefits deriving from the cruise for the Greek economy are undoubtedly significant. The cruise sector has the unique potential to combine nautical activity simultaneously with tourist activity; consequently the benefits are twofold. This is the reason why multiple benefits can come in sectors such as industry, imports, exports, trade, services and employment. The potential and the perspective that the cruise sector creates for the Greek economy will be analyzed in the fifth chapter of this project. At the same time the initiative necessary to resolve the problems that the sector faces today are to be defined, so that the Greek economy can significantly benefit from it.
